NZ Economy: Big Challenges In Fixing A Damaged Economy

February 10th, 2010

At Tuesday’s all-day session on working on this year’s political programme, National’s Caucus enthusiastically backed the overhaul of the tax structure the PM will outline in his opening statement to Parliament next week. John Key says his first major speech of the year will contain “a reasonably detailed shopping list of the economic agenda for National in 2010″ and will address issues such as GST and land tax. Parliament resumes next week against the backdrop of an economy gradually recovering from the impact of the global financial crisis.

Finance Minister Bill English, who will present the budget on May 20, says there are still big challenges for the Govt. He stunned the Caucus when he told them net Crown debt would more than treble to a forecast $65bn by 2014, and reducing this to where it stood in 2008 could take more than a decade. English says the recovery is a “bit patchy” for a wide range of people to yet see the benefits, and the budget will focus “on fixing a damaged economy and restoring the Govt’s books.”
