Guy Strengthens Wellington’s Voice In The Ministry
June 18th, 2009
Nathan Guy’s elevation to the Ministerial ranks to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Richard Worth, followed by the promotion of Chris Tremain and Jo Goodhew to be the whips, rewards solid performance by those MPs. Guy will be a strong advocate for the Wellington region within the Ministry (Wellington has been under-represented, with only Peter Dunne in the Ministry previously). Both Guy and Dunne are vociferous advocates of the Transmission Gully option for Wellington’s northern outlet, and they may have enough clout to ensure the alternative doesn’t get traction. Guy will be an associate Minister of Transport, besides holding the Internal Affairs portfolio, but Transport Minister Steven Joyce, who has been one of the most impressive among the new Ministers, will hang on to the infrastructure side of the portfolio, including major roading projects. So if Cabinet decides to ditch Transmission Gully, Guy will find himself bound by collective responsibility to support the decision.
