Auckland Governance Could Hold Economic Key

February 19th, 2009

The Govt is looking to the Royal Commission on Auckland governance, due to report next month, for some proposals which will streamline the system under which NZ’s largest metropolitan region has to labour at present. Some experts think reform of Auckland’s local Govt structure could be the step which more than any other could unlock the greatest real value for the country, during the Key Govt’s first term. Critics say some of the assets under local body control in Auckland have undergone the largest destruction of value of any in the last decade. Meanwhile the Govt is digging through the grab-bag of plans to improve Auckland’s infrastructure which it inherited from the previous Govt in order to establish proper funding priorities.
